SPACE MISSIONS

QuickBird

EarthWatch's initial plans called for a two-satellite series, each having single-band panchromatic and multi-band color sensors. The first satellite was targeted for a first quarter 1996 launch with three-meter panchromatic resolution and 15-meter multicolor sensors. This initial EarlyBird satellite was launched December 24, 1997 from Svobodny, Russia. Communications were lost December 28, 1997 as the result of an anomalous satellite undervoltage condition. The second satellite, originally scheduled for launch in the third quarter 1997 with high resolution one-meter panchromatic and four-meter multicolor sensors. The latest I've been able to find indicate a launch in 2000 for QuickBird.

QUASAT

The QUASAT concept was originated at JPL in the early 1980s, and proposed to ESA as a joint ESA/NASA mission in 1982. The proposal called for 15m class antenna with observing bands at 0.3, 1.6, 5 and 22 GHz. The QUASAT proposal reached Phase-A stage before losing out in 1988 to the ESA Huygens probe for the Cassini mission.

RADARSAT

Launched November 4, 1995, on a Delta II launch vehicle from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.

RadioAstron

Part of the Spectrum series of spacecraft being built in Russia, scheduled for launch in late 1997.

Ranger

RapidEye

Constellation of four commercial remote sensing satellites. As of June 2000, the RapidEye web page and press reports both indicate planned launch dates in late 2002 and 2003.

RESURS

RoLand -- Rosetta Lander

The international comet mission Rosetta will carry two comet landers, Champollion and RoLand. Planned for launch on an Ariane 5 in January 2003.

ROSAT -- ROentgen SATellite X-ray observatory

RXTE -- Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer

Launched on December 30th, 1995 on a Delta II launch vehicle.
